This session examines the contrasting operational styles of Russia- and China-aligned threat actors through two examples. We will explore Gamaredon’s high-volume, noisy campaigns against Ukrainian organizations and its role as an initial access broker for the Turla APT. In contrast, we will present a detailed case study of FamousSparrow, a stealthier actor linked to the infamous Salt Typhoon APT, involving an intrusion at a high-profile organization, including the initial access vector and tools observed during remediation. Together, these examples provide perspective on how different APT ecosystems approach their objectives and what that means for defenders.
