The Baltic region is strategically important for Europe. Lithuania sits at the frontline of geopolitical tensions and plays a key role in NATO’s deterrence. Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in neighboring countries highlight ongoing efforts to destabilise Europe’s security environment alongside the war in Ukraine.
In Europe, calls for greater technological sovereignty – the ability to choose and act independently, autonomously, and securely – have become increasingly urgent. The once largely philosophical debates about strategic autonomy, particularly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have evolved into concrete policy priorities across defense, energy, and the digital domain.
Today, Europe faces growing pressure from hybrid attacks and an increasingly complex cyber threat landscape, intensified by AI-driven tools that further enhance the sophistication of cyberattacks, enabling attackers to automate operations, while defenders use them to protect critical systems and data. Geopolitics and AI are redefining cybersecurity and amplifying the need for resilient, sovereign digital capabilities.
